HIPAA, PCI DSS and NIST 800-53 hardening for a cloud SIEM
A GCP-hosted Wazuh deployment had to satisfy three control frameworks at once. The deliverable was not a policy document. It was a hardening plan an administrator could execute, plus evidence an assessor would accept.
- Client
- A US security consultancy
- Sector
- Healthcare and payments clients
- Engagement
- Fixed-scope contract
- Timeline
- Six months
The platform collected and stored security telemetry for clients in healthcare and payments, which put it in scope for HIPAA, PCI DSS and NIST SP 800-53 simultaneously.
Access was the weak point: administrative reach that was wider than the work required, and no consistent evidence trail for the controls it was meant to satisfy.
- 01
Map controls to systems
Each requirement was tied to a specific system and a specific control, so the gap list described configuration rather than intent.
- 02
Cut the blast radius
RBAC was rebuilt around the roles people actually held, MFA was enforced through GCP IAP, and management planes were removed from the public internet.
- 03
Encrypt and retain
Data at rest and in transit was reviewed, including CMEK where the frameworks required customer-managed keys, along with log retention and review evidence.
- 04
Hand it over
The plan shipped with a control checklist, an evidence pack structure and a walkthrough for the administrators who had to run it.
Tell me what yours looks like.
A short note about the system and the trigger is enough to say whether this pattern applies, and what a sensible scope would be.
